Basildon Labour councillors voted unanimously AGAINST any plans to introduce a congestion charge in Basildon.
At the start of 2018 the Conservative Government gave Basildon Council ‘ministerial direction’ that a congestion charge on the A127 may need to be introduced into order to reduce air pollution. This Conservative Congestion Charge will be bad for residents, bad for business and bad for Basildon.
At a time when public transport is already unaffordable for lots of people, council tax is rising, the cost of living is rising and the price of petrol continues to rise, introducing a further travel tax in the borough is grossly unfair and not welcomed. This plan would cost families and businesses hundreds of pounds a year.
We call on the Conservative party should think again and provide assurances to residents on Basildon, Laindon, Billericay, Wickford and Pitsea that they will not impose a congestion charge on the borough.
