Labour’s parliamentary candidate for South Basildon and East Thurrock, Mike Le-Surf, joined forces with Jack Dromey MP this week to promote Usdaw’s Freedom from Fear campaign and offer their support to “Respect for Shopworkers Week” 2014.
“Respect for Shopworkers Week” runs from 10th-14th November
Mike Le-Surf has joined with members of the retail union Usdaw to campaign for respect for shopworkers as part of the Freedom from Tear campaign which seeks to prevent violence, threat and abuse directed at retail staff.
Attending a campaign event at the House of Commons, Mike has pledged to support a protection of workers bill that would introduce a specific offence of assaulting a worker serving the public.
Mike said: “I support Usdaw’s campaign and am outraged that the current Tory MP has voted to block this in parliament. I will continue to campaign with Usdaw for a change in the law and to give a clear message that assaulting workers who are serving the public is totally unacceptable.”
John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary said: We are grateful that Mike Le-Surf for supporting our campaign to keep our members safe at work.”
Usdaw’s Freedom from Fear Survey report 2014 states that 51% of shop workers have been the victim of verbal abuse, 30% have been threatened and 7% have been the victim of violent assaults.
